There’s something truly enchanting about Christmas in Whitby. Whether you’re strolling along the harbour with mulled wine in hand or browsing independent shops for last-minute gifts, Whitby brings a uniquely charming twist to Christmas. For me, it’s the lights, twinkling in the dark nights and reflecting over the water. Pure magic.
Markets, Makers & Merry Finds

Christmas shopping in Whitby is a joy for anyone who loves one-of-a-kind gifts. The town’s artisan spirit shines through in its seasonal markets and quirky independent shops.
- On the 13th and 14th December this year the ‘Made in Whitby’ festival comes to the grounds of Whitby Brewery. With the stunning backdrop of the Whitby Abbey you can find roast chestnuts, fabulous live music with a traditional Dickensian feel
- You’ll find perfect stocking fillers in the boutiques along Church Street and Sandgate.
- And of course, no visit is complete without stopping by a jet workshop for a piece of Whitby jet jewellery—a timeless and distinctly local present.
Cosy Pubs & Seasonal Seafood
Whitby’s food scene transforms for the festive time, combining hearty winter comforts with fresh coastal flavours.
- Traditional pubs offer roaring fires, festive ales, and Christmas specials.
- Many restaurants serve locally caught fish with seasonal twists.
- And if you’re brave, nothing beats enjoying fish and chips by the seaside on a crisp December afternoon.
Warm cafés with views of the waves make the perfect hideaway from the cold, offering hot chocolate, spiced bakes, and a welcome break from strolling the hilly streets. Our favourite is the ‘Moist maker’ from Mr Coopers Coffee House!
Seasonal Events & Coastal Walks
From carol services at St. Mary’s Church to winter ghost walks that explore Whitby’s legendary past, there’s no shortage of festive fun. The ‘Peculiar Whitby walking tours’ are proving very popular. The dramatic coastline becomes even more striking in winter—ideal for those who love invigorating walks.
Take a trip on the Santa Express along the North Yorkshire Moors Railway. A special steam train filled with carols, elves and a chance of children to meet the man in red!
The Whitby Krampus run is taking place on the 6th December. An alternative event celebrating European folklore with a parade of Krampus figures, drummers and fire breathers. It’s the 10th anniversary this year so will be bigger and furrier than ever!
A Christmas Escape You’ll Want to Repeat
For those brave enough, the Whitby Lions Boxing day dip is a great event to raise money for charity. It’s a magnificent event to watch from the cliff as hundreds of brave or crazy people run into the sea!
Whether you’re visiting for festive shopping, a coastal getaway, or simply to soak in the charming winter atmosphere, Christmas in Whitby offers an experience both nostalgic and refreshingly unique. It’s the kind of place where holiday magic feels natural—rooted in tradition, shaped by the sea, and illuminated by community spirit.
